Payload Services

Andøya Rocket Range has developed a reliable and cost-effective sounding rocket payload service aimed at scientific research in the middle atmosphere and ionosphere.

This means that you as a customer can concentrate your work and resources on constructing your scientific instruments. Andøya Rocket Range provides the payload structure including housekeeping, rocket motors and complete launch services for a fixed price.

This reduction in mission complexity will make it easier for universities and research institutes to undertake a sounding rocket mission.

Middle and Upper Atmosphere

The payload structure is based on a 356 mm (14 inches) diameter design, and can be included in a single or two stage motor configuration, enabling it to reach the middle or the upper atmosphere.

From Planning to Splash Down

ARR offer a complete service from the early planning stage to splash down: project management, payload engineering, production and qualification and launch services from Andøya and / or Svalbard.

Optional Services

- Additional housekeeping systems such as GPS, cameras or others.
- Mechanical subsystems (doors and booms, de-spin, motor separation system).
- Scientific electronics interface systems.
- Recovery systems.

The payload service will be an important part of a new Norwegian national sounding rocket program, aiming for yearly launches.

HotPay2

Using our payload service, HotPay2 was part of an EU financed scientific program called eARI. HotPay2 carried nine instrument packages designed to perform auroral science, upper mesosphere and lower thermosphere science and measure the cosmic ray flux. Launched from Andøya in January 2008.

ICI-2

Launched from Ny-Ålesund, Svalbard, ICI-2 will fly into the Ionosphere in December 2008. Its scientific objective is to single out the physical mechanisms running cusp ionospheric plasma unstability and facilitate backscatter targets for coherent HF radars.
Similar to Hotpay 2, ICI-2 will be powered by a two stage motor configuration for an apogee of about 350 km.
